Stylist - “Penetrative sex is the only kind that counts” - and 9 other myths about sex that experts wish they’d unlearnt sooner

“As a teenager I had friends who seemed to think lube was something to be ashamed about using, as if you’d done something wrong if you used it,” says sex educator and author Milly Evans.

“Lube wasn’t as readily available as condoms in our town, nor did you ever see it on a bedside table in sex scenes or porn, so its absence was normalised.”

The Guardian - Don’t feel pressured, learn to ‘simmer’ and keep experimenting: how to have great sex at every stage of life

“It’s not helpful to think of sex as having one big ‘first time’. You’ll probably have lots of first times,” says Milly Evans, author of Honest: Everything They Don’t Tell You About Sex, Relationships and Bodies. Instead, she advises breaking it down into all the individual firsts you might have – “your first time having oral sex, penetrative sex, using hands or using toys”. Even if you experience all of these with one person, there will be a whole new set of firsts to explore with a different partner.

Netflix - Sex Education Season 4

Milly’s book HONEST: Everything They Don’t Tell You About Sex, Relationships and Bodies was featured on the final season of Netflix’s Sex Education. You can spot it in Episode 7 as one of the books O uses to learn about sex and relationships!

Cosmopolitan - How to navigate your first queer date

“Queer dating can sometimes be more intense and there often aren’t as many unspoken ‘rules’ as there are for non-queer dating," says Milly Evans, a queer sex educator and author of HONEST: Everything They Don’t Tell You About Sex, Relationships and Bodies. “Many of us can feel quite overwhelmed when we first start dating as queer people because we might have a sense of excitement and giddiness about finally exploring the kinds of relationships we want to have, or we might have a lot of anxiety and feel a lot of pressure for our relationships to go right.”

GAY TIMES - TikTok has become a digital home for LGBTQ+ users

On TikTok, queer people are free to be as creative, funny, honest and innovative as they choose. Queer creators are the ones inventing trends, setting the cultural agenda and offering up inspiration to over one billion people all around the world. Whether you’re a LGBTQIA+ creator uploading videos and crafting content, or a lurker lying in bed laughing as you scroll through your For You Page sending TikToks to friends, it’s a place where anyone can explore who they are and express their identity.

Broccoli Productions (Sony Music) - Let’s Talk About Sex (Education)

Debates about what should or shouldn’t be taught in RSE can so often be driven by misinformation, fear-mongering, and political agendas — but at what cost?

Let’s Talk About Sex (Education) is a one-off documentary examining some of the (many) reasons why a comprehensive and inclusive sex education curriculum matters. It features the voices of sex educators, journalists, students and others, all of whom wish they'd learned, wish they'd been taught, more.

Buzzfeed - This Sex Educator Went Viral On TikTok For Being Candid About The "Rules Of Female Pleasure," And It's Time To Get Your Notebooks Out

Milly uses her TikTok account as a place to break the stigma around sexual health by educating, informing, and simply talking about the topic in a digestible, friendly way.

"I didn’t plan for those videos to go viral, but I wasn’t all that surprised that it happened. I think it’s unfortunate that people are having to turn to the internet for education that they should be getting in their community, not least because I feel that we learn best through discussions tailored to our unique circumstances," Milly told BuzzFeed.

Literary Hub - Is Gillian Anderson’s New Anthology of Women’s Sexual Fantasies Too Restrictive?

‘Evans says she wants to see more curiosity about fantasy—and that in her experience, covering the subject in a book rather than on social media means a better quality conversation.

“When people are feeling worried or upset about their own fantasies—whether that’s because they don’t know if having fantasies is normal, or because their fantasies are of a more “extreme” nature—it can be difficult for them to speak to someone without feeling like they’re going to be shut down or mocked,” the author says.’

Urban Outfitters - Body and Mind Panel

"Knowing what I know now, what do I wish I'd been taught in school?"

Hosted by Dee Whitnell, a non-binary, accredited RSHE educator, Ft. guest panellists: Nicole Gleeson, a sex-positive content creator; Milly Evans, an accredited sex educator and author of 'Honest: Everything They Don't Tell You About Sex, Relationships and Bodies'; and Max Hovey, writer, creator, activist and author of 'How Are You Feeling' Journal.

Milly discusses their experience of being diagnosed with ADHD and autism and what they think can be done to improve sex education as well as accessibility in clinical services.

Student Beans - Generation Sex Zed: Gen Z Say They Don’t Feel Represented

“‘It’s important that we get our sex education from lots of people, places and experiences and TikTok is just one of the tools young people can use to get their information. But it’s crucial to seek out reliable educators on social media because there is so much misinformation and bad advice out there, particularly when it comes to sexual health and healthy relationships.’”

Hull Daily Mail - Everything Teens want to know about sex but are afraid to ask

“Milly, 22, says school sex education is ‘incredibly valuable’, but points out that large chunks of information can sometimes be skipped. ‘So young people might be in a lesson about condoms or contraception but still not know the correct words for their genitals or how to ask for consent. The disjointedness can be a real issue and leaves a lot of young people still waiting for the basics.’”

My Morning After (ellaOne) - “My Sex Ed Story”

“My parents were my main source of sex ed because their jobs in the sex toy industry meant that we could have very open and honest conversations. But that, in many ways, didn't make up for the lack of LGBTQ information at my school.”

The Guardian - Sex education: “We can’t let teachers perpetuate a homophobia or transphobic narrative”

‘“Pretty much everything to do with LGBT stuff was just swept under the carpet,” Evans says. She adds there is “too much room for interpretation” around the two paragraphs dedicated to LGBT issues. “We can’t continue to allow teachers, education and religious officials to perpetuate a homophobic or transphobic narrative in sex education,” she says.’

Milly Evans, 19-year-old founder of I Support Sex Education, a website raising the profile of sex ed around the world, says young people are increasingly looking to popular culture – films, TV, the internet – for information about love and sex and that we should not be surprised.

“For them, Love Island offers viewers an ‘authentic’ look into relationships, friendships and drama. It’s addictive. It’s also the kind of entertainment many families will sit down to watch in the evening. It’s easy to get immersed in it.”’

CYP Now - Relationships and Sex Education - ‘What I wish I had learned about sex’

“Giving parents and carers the tools to continue conversations in the home is key to providing a holistic approach to sex education. I'm definitely one of the lucky ones. My parents have always reaffirmed my bodily autonomy and ability to say "no", making me able to make the right decisions for myself and support those around me. But, at the moment, for many young people RSE isn't happening at school or at home, leaving them to turn to the internet for answers.”

The Nopebook - Sex Education Needs a Revolution, Not Updates to Outdated Guidelines

‘Milly Evans, founder of I Support Sex Education, a campaign for better sex education and access to sexual and reproductive health rights commented: ‘Without explicitly telling schools what they are to teach in relation to LGBTQ+ issues and how they should teach it, I don’t believe we are vastly better off than the previous guidance. There is also a suggestion that religion should influence the way that relationships and sex education is taught in faith schools, which puts “contentious” issues such as sexuality, gender, casual sex and abortion at risk.’’

IPPF Youth Against Abortion Stigma - Abortion messaging workshop in London

Despite one in three women in the UK having had an abortion, we still have a long way to go in how we talk about it, particularly in the media. By avoiding the word entirely or using pictures of pregnant women weeks from giving birth in articles, the media creates subtle  biases and stereotypes which are damaging to those who choose to terminate a pregnancy. As organisations and individuals we have to make sure that those around us and the general public are getting the information they need to make informed decisions about their bodies.

NetDoctor - How to talk to your daughter about porn, sexting and what a healthy relationship looks like

Samantha Evans' daughter, Milly, 17, is a sexual health activist and on the FPA Youth Committee. She believes it is crucial for parents to have a sex-positive attitude and to be supportive rather than prohibitive:

"It's important to feel that your parents will answer questions openly and not shamefully, as it's a positive thing when girls are choosing to be a sexual beings and beginning to explore themselves. If parents shut down conversations about porn, kids are still going to go looking for it anyway. We need to hear that porn is different in so many ways from sex in real life."
